Social Skills
Children, teens and young adults suffering from depression, mood disorders, self-esteem issues, substance abuse issues, and the effects of autism or ADHD often experience difficulties relating to their peers, parents and other adults. AFHC has often found that the best way to help people relate positively to others is to remove them from their natural comfort zones and engage them in supportive group experiences in the out-of-doors.
The staff at Blackwater Outdoor Experiences (BOE), AFHC’s outdoor therapeutic program, organizes activities that promote greater self-confidence, enhanced social skills, and personal competence. Using experiential therapy, the natural challenges of the out-of-doors and peer group support, BOE’s social skills programs offer an engaging alternative to traditional, office-based “talk therapy.”
